SAA Literature: Getting a Sponsor
This Conference Approved pamphlet from the ISO of SAA gives important information to the newcomer and others on sponsorship and obtaining a sponsor.
Languages: English - Spanish - Italian
What is a Sponsor?
A sponsor is someone who has worked the Twelve Steps of SAA, has a significant amount of sobriety, and is willing to guide others in working the Steps.
Being a sponsor is the most basic way of working Step Twelve:
Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other sex addicts and to practice these principles in our lives.
Who Needs a Sponsor?
Ideally, everyone should have a sponsor, even after working the Steps. However, those who are most in need of a sponsor include newcomers and anyone struggling or needing to restart their recovery.
How to Get a Sponsor?
In the SAA online groups, there is no established procedure for obtaining a sponsor. The most basic method applies: ask, ask, ask!
If you are looking for a sponsor, speak up when sharing or ask someone directly. Many people find it is best to ask someone whose personal story you can relate to.
If the person you ask says no, there are many possible reasons. Maybe they are still working the steps, or haven't been in the program very long. Maybe they are going through difficult personal times and can't take on the role of a sponsor. Maybe they have many sponsees and cannot handle any more.
Don't take it personally! Instead, move on and ask someone else.
Because women and LGBTQ+ members may have a harder time finding someone like them to be their sponsor, there are special lists set up from the ISO of SAA. Email info@saa-recovery.org for more information on these lists.
